Organisational Audit

Edge Effect can work with your organisations to design and implement an audit or whole-of-organisation review of diverse SOGIESC (aka LGBTIQ+) inclusion. It may be tempting to treat LGBTIQ+ inclusion as program add-on or just another form of diversity in a GESI framework. That’s rarely effective in practice. Organisations that don’t walk the walk internally, are less likely to build genuine partnerships with diverse SOGIESC organisations and communities. Heteronormative, cisnormative and binary assumptions are often present in humanitarian and development frameworks and tools, and unless you address those, any programs work is likely to be undermined. And it’s not just programs: comms, advocacy, fundraising, IT, recruitment and all aspects of your organisation are part of this picture.

Client: Australian Volunteers Program

Edge Effect was commissioned to review diverse SOGIESC inclusion across the Australian Volunteers Program. This program provides volunteer placements in 26 countries.  Our work included an inception workshop with Program staff, a review of internal and external literature, a survey of LGBTIQ+ volunteers, key informant interviews with staff and volunteers, participation in pre-departure briefings, review of online resources for volunteers, and review of organisational policy and country security plans.. The resultant report is internal only, however references can be provided. Edge Effect continues to work with the Program to implement recommendations, and this work was part of a panel discussion at the 2020 Australasian Aid Conference.

Workshops and Onboarding

Edge Effect provides a range of learning opportunities for humanitarian and development organisations. This includes programming focused workshops that cover LGBTIQ+ lived experience, the current state of diverse SOGIESC inclusion in humanitarian and development systems, community engagement and partnering with LGBTIQ+ CSOs, data collection and management, protection and risk management, and other key aspects of humanitarian and development work. These courses will be available online from mid-2020. We also provide on-boarding courses suitable for all staff, whether in IT, fundraising, or any other role in organisations – we believe that LGBTIQ+ awareness should be part of all on-boarding programs, and we can provide online, self-paced programs with certificate services
